Na Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Desenvolvimento Sustentável de 2012, realizada no Rio de Janeiro (Brasil), os estados membros decidiram substituir os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento do Milênio (estabelecidos em 2000) pelos Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS). O primeiro ODS era "acabar com a pobreza em todas as suas formas, em todos os lugares". Apesar das palavras entusiasmadas, ficou claro que a pobreza simplesmente não seria erradicada em todo o mundo. Mesmo antes da pandemia de COVID-19, os dados mostravam que a pobreza se tornara intratável.
Em outubro de 2022, o Programa das Nações Unidas para o Desenvolvimento e a Iniciativa de Pobreza e Desenvolvimento Humano de Oxford divulgaram o relatório do Índice Global de Pobreza Multidimensional de 2022, que mostrou que pelo menos 1,2 bilhão de pessoas em 111 países em desenvolvimento vivem em pobreza multidimensional aguda. Os "conjuntos de privação" mencionados no título completo do relatório exploram como uma série de instalações necessárias estão ausentes para mais de um bilhão de pessoas. Por exemplo, o relatório observa: "Quase metade dos pobres (470,1 milhões) são privados tanto de nutrição quanto de saneamento, tornando-os potencialmente mais vulneráveis ​​a doenças infecciosas. Além disso, mais da metade dos pobres (593,3 milhões) são privados simultaneamente tanto de combustível para cozinhar quanto de eletricidade". Esses "conjuntos de privação" - a ausência tanto de eletricidade quanto de combustível limpo para cozinhar, por exemplo - amplificam os baixos salários recebidos por bilhões de pessoas.
Em 2017, o Banco Mundial determinou que o limiar de renda para a pobreza, que havia sido fixado em US$ 1,90 por dia, era muito baixo. Eles estabeleceram a nova linha de pobreza em US$ 2,15 por dia, o que inclui mais de 700 milhões de pessoas. O relatório de Pobreza e Prosperidade Compartilhada do Banco Mundial de 2022, usando dados de 2019, mostrou que se a linha de pobreza for fixada em US$ 3,65 por dia, 23% do mundo vive na pobreza, e se a linha for fixada em US$ 6,85 por dia, então quase metade da população mundial (47%) vive abaixo da linha de pobreza. Esses números são horripilantes.

When to these recollections was added the development of Wickham’s character, it may be easily believed that the happy spirits which had seldom been depressed before, were now so much affected as to make it almost impossible for her to appear tolerably cheerful.
